Top Poultry Diseases in Nigeria and How to Prevent Them

Introduction

Every poultry farmer in Nigeria has a disease story. The 500 broilers that were fine on Wednesday and dead by Sunday. The layers that were at 80% production in April and crashed to 35% by May with no obvious cause. The batch of DOCs that never thrive past week two no matter how good your feed is.

Disease is not bad luck. In the vast majority of cases, it is the predictable result of preventable failures: skipped vaccines, poor biosecurity, contaminated water, or sourcing from infected DOC batches.

The best-managed farms in Nigeria — including our own at Bamakawa Farm — lose less than 3% of birds to disease annually. Poorly managed farms routinely lose 20–40%.   1. Newcastle Disease (ND) — The Silent Destroyer

What It Is

Newcastle Disease (caused by Newcastle Disease Virus, NDV) is arguably the most feared poultry disease in Nigeria. It is endemic in Nigeria's commercial and backyard poultry — meaning it is always present in the environment. It affects layers, broilers, and indigenous birds equally, and velogenic (highly pathogenic) strains can kill 80–100% of an unvaccinated flock within 72 hours.

Newcastle spreads through direct contact with infected birds, contaminated equipment, personnel, feed bags, and even wild birds. A motorcycle dispatch rider who visited another farm before yours can introduce NDV on his boots.

Signs to Watch For

• Sudden deaths with no prior symptoms — in velogenic ND, birds you walked past at 6am are dead by noon.

• Twisted neck (torticollis) and circling — nervous system involvement.

• Greenish, watery diarrhoea.

• Sharp drop in egg production in layers, misshapen or rough-shelled eggs.

• Coughing, sneezing, rattling breathing, beak open gasping.

Prevention

Vaccination is the ONLY effective protection. Cold chain integrity is critical — a vaccine stored improperly in Nigeria's heat is worse than no vaccine at all, because it gives you false confidence while providing zero immunity. Standard ND schedule for Nigerian conditions:

• Day 7: LaSota live vaccine via eye drop (preferred) or drinking water.

• Day 21: LaSota live booster.

• 6–8 Weeks (layers/breeders only): Killed ND oil emulsion injection for long-lasting antibody levels.

• Every 3 months (layers): Live LaSota booster throughout the laying period.

  1. Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD / Gumboro)

What It Is

Gumboro disease, caused by IBDV, targets the immune system at its foundation — the Bursa of Fabricius in birds aged 3–8 weeks. Birds that survive an active Gumboro outbreak often remain immunosuppressed for their entire production life, making them vulnerable to Newcastle, coccidiosis, and every secondary infection that comes their way. Many Nigerian farmers treat and see apparent recovery, then wonder why their flock underperforms for the rest of the cycle.

Signs to Watch For

• Sudden lethargy — birds that were active become huddled and dull within 24 hours.

• White or blood-stained watery diarrhoea.

• Severe dehydration — birds drink excessively.

• Trembling, loss of coordination.

• In severe outbreaks: 20–30% mortality within 5–7 days.

Prevention

IBD vaccination is administered at Day 10–14 and boosted at Day 24–28. In high-challenge areas — including most of Kano, Kaduna, and Lagos states — intermediate-plus or thermostable strains (e.g., Nobilis IBD Ultra) are recommended for stronger protection. Work with your vet to determine the right IBD strain for your specific location and challenge level.

  1. Coccidiosis — The Silent Profit Killer

What It Is

Coccidiosis is caused by Eimeria parasites and is endemic in virtually every Nigerian poultry farm that uses deep litter housing. It is most devastating in birds aged 2–8 weeks. Unlike viral diseases, coccidiosis is not controlled by a single vaccine — it requires a combination of anticoccidial medication and rigorous litter management.

In Nigeria's wet season (May–September), wet and caked litter creates the perfect breeding ground for Eimeria oocysts. A litter management failure in rainy season is a coccidiosis outbreak waiting to happen.

Signs to Watch For

• Bloody or mucoid (slimy) droppings — especially in cecal coccidiosis.

• Pale, anaemic-looking combs and wattles.

• Birds hunched with ruffled feathers and reduced appetite.

• Severe growth stunting — birds 30–40% below target weight at slaughter.

Prevention and Treatment

• Include Amprolium or Diclazuril in starter feed for the first 4 weeks as prevention.

• At first sign of bloody droppings: treat immediately with Toltrazuril (Baycox) in drinking water for 2 consecutive days.

• Litter management: Turn litter every 5–7 days. Remove heavily caked sections immediately. Reduce drinker leakage — wet patches under drinkers are coccidiosis hotspots.

• Between cycles: Full litter removal, concrete floor cleaning with a broad-spectrum disinfectant (formalin + quaternary ammonium compound), and 2-week empty period before restocking.

  1. Fowl Typhoid and Salmonellosis

What It Is

Caused by Salmonella gallinarum (Fowl Typhoid) and related bacteria, this disease kills birds and also carries significant public health implications — Salmonella from insufficiently cooked poultry products can cause serious food poisoning in consumers. • Yellowish-green diarrhoea — a distinctive sign in Fowl Typhoid.

• Sudden deaths in apparently healthy birds.

Prevention

Source chicks only from Salmonella-tested hatcheries with clean health records. Rodent control is critical — mice and rats are major Salmonella carriers and are endemic on most Nigerian farms that do not have active pest management programmes. Chlorinate drinking water. Limit personnel movement between farms. Under veterinary guidance, antibiotic treatment (Enrofloxacin, Oxytetracycline) can reduce flock losses during an active outbreak.

  1. Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

What It Is

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1) has caused periodic outbreaks in Nigeria, with confirmed cases recorded as recently as 2024 by the Federal Department of Livestock Services. It is a notifiable disease — you are legally required under Nigerian veterinary law to report suspected cases to your State Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Department.

Signs to Watch For

• Catastrophic sudden mortality — 80–100% flock death within 24–48 hours in severe outbreaks.

• Respiratory distress, gasping.

• Severe swelling (oedema) of head, comb, wattles, and eyelids — often with a dark purple-blue discolouration.

• Cessation of egg production virtually overnight.

• Complete loss of appetite and extreme lethargy before death.

Prevention

There is currently no commercially approved HPAI vaccine for the general poultry farmer in Nigeria. Prevention is entirely biosecurity-based: no wild birds or free-range poultry should have any access to your farm; all-in/all-out production is mandatory; visitor restrictions must be enforced; and any unusual mass mortality must be reported immediately to state veterinary authorities — not treated speculatively.

Do not dispose of birds suspected of HPAI by selling into the live bird market. This is how outbreaks spread across states.

  1. Marek's Disease

Caused by Marek's Disease Virus (MDV), this disease produces tumours, leg and wing paralysis, and progressive immunosuppression. The critical fact about Marek's: it can only be prevented by vaccination administered at the hatchery within 24 hours of hatch. There is no treatment. There is no catching up if it was missed. This is why verifying hatchery Marek's vaccination is non-negotiable when sourcing DOCs. If your supplier cannot confirm Marek's vaccination, find a different supplier.

  1. Fowl Pox — Especially in Open-Sided Houses

Fowl Pox spreads through mosquito bites — making it a particular risk in open-sided housing during rainy season in Nigeria when mosquito populations peak. It causes crusty wart-like lesions on the face, comb, and wattles (dry pox) or yellowish plaques inside the mouth and throat (wet pox). Wet pox causes breathing difficulty and is often fatal.

Prevention is by wing-web scarification with Fowl Pox vaccine at 6–8 weeks. In high-mosquito-pressure areas — including most parts of southern Nigeria and the Middle Belt — vaccination is strongly recommended.

Biosecurity: The Foundation of Disease Prevention

No vaccination programme in the world can substitute for basic biosecurity. On Nigerian farms, where disease pressure is high and veterinary oversight is inconsistent, biosecurity is your first and most important line of defence.

• All-in, all-out: Never mix age groups in the same house. Complete depopulation, cleaning, disinfection, and a 2-week empty period between every cycle.

• Footbath at every entry point: Freshly prepared disinfectant (2% formalin or 1:200 Virkon solution). Changed daily. Non-negotiable.

• Dedicated farm clothing and footwear: Personnel who work on your farm must not wear the same clothes they use on other farms or live bird markets.

• Rodent and pest exclusion: Block all entry points. Active rodent trapping. No feed storage in open bags on the farm floor.

• Dead bird disposal: Immediate burial or incineration. Never dump in open waste heaps or behind the farm — this is how Newcastle and Salmonella spread to neighbours.

• New bird quarantine: Any birds brought from outside must be isolated for 2 full weeks and observed before joining existing flocks.
